Spam: Who Needs It?

Anyone who has posted an article in a popular Internet newsgroup, or whose e-mail address has appeared on a Web page, will probably be able to tell you horror stories about receiving, on an ongoing basis, increasing amounts of unsolicited e-mail ("spam"). Senders of spam ("spammers") use simple to sophisticated software to "troll" Web pages, bulletin boards, newsgroups and other public forums for e-mail addresses, in order to create mailing lists which they then sell to other spammers. These lists seem to never die: you may have, in your frivolous youth, posted only one message on a now-defunct Usenet newsgroup, only to discover that the e-mail address which you posted with has lived on, in the spamming community.

ChiaraMail: The Spammer's Worst Nightmare

ChiaraMail is simply a highly effective filter for unsolicited e-mail (spam). For anyone who receives a large amount of spam on a regular basis (the author receives over 800 pieces per day, on average), taking the time to wade through and delete spam can easily become burdensome. Moreover, manually selecting spam for deletion using certain popular mail clients, including Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0, causes the message to be downloaded to your computer and can, using current technology, result in identifying your Internet identity to the spammer's organization, as well as potentially locking up your computer.

ChiaraMail deals with the problem of spam in the following ways:

·         Allow for selection of messages without downloading the message content

·         Permit only mail from selected mailing lists to be passed through

·         Filter out mail having a predetermined wildcard-supported subject and sender

·         Optional notification messages sent to spam senders and their postmasters

ChiaraMail automatically moves suspected spam from your IMAP or POP3 inbox to a spam folder, which you can then review for deletion without having to fetch and view the message content; that way, it is unlikely that you would delete messages which you intended to keep. ChiaraMail is easy to install, customize and operate and, being written entirely in the Java programming language, is able to run on many different types of computers and operating systems.
