Anyone who has posted an article in a popular Internet newsgroup, or whose e-mail address has appeared on a Web page, will probably be able to tell you horror stories about receiving, on an ongoing basis, increasing amounts of unsolicited e-mail ("spam"). Senders of spam ("spammers") use simple to sophisticated software to "troll" Web pages, bulletin boards, newsgroups and other public forums for e-mail addresses, in order to create mailing lists which they then sell to other spammers. These lists seem to never die: you may have, in your frivolous youth, posted only one message on a now-defunct Usenet newsgroup, only to discover that the e-mail address which you posted with has lived on, in the spamming community.

For anyone who receives a large amount of spam on a regular basis (the author receives over 800 pieces per day, on average), taking the time to wade through and delete spam can easily become burdensome.
